Tõnu Noorits
Tõnu Noorits, PhD (b. 1952) graduated from the University of Tartu in 1975 as a biologist. He defended his doctoral degree in 1984. He has been involved in photography since 1982. In 1992, together with Silver Vahtre, he founded the design and art company KYNA, where he works on photo productions, design and publishing. He is a versatile creator and his works – portraits, nudes, photo productions, abstract landscapes – often contain unexpected visions.
His photographs are characterized by high visual culture and perfect execution. He was the most exhibited Estonian author in European photo salons in the last decades of the last century. He has had 35 solo exhibitions in various countries – in Austria, Belgium, Italy, Latvia, France, Sweden, Germany, as well as 12 group exhibitions.
Tõnu Noorits has won many awards, including 3 FIAP gold medals, KTF gold medal (winner of the “Venus” photo salon in 1987), PSA gold medal, NIEPCE medals, winner’s medal of the 1989 Japanese photo salon, Estonian Photographic Society annual awards (1990, 1992), gold medals from Austria (Linz, 1999, 2000), etc.
His works are in the Bilbao Art Museum, Columbia College Museum of Photography in Chicago and in private collections in Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Belgium, France, and the USA.
He has decorated the interiors of a number of institutions with his works, including the new office building of RAS Estimpeks (1995), and has contributed to many media and art publications.
