Sorge

Sorge, also known as Margus Tiitsmaa (b. 1963) artistic journey has been long and colorful. During the Soviet era, he studied in the art department of the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute, worked as a department store window dresser, and secretly staged performance art pieces in the Saue oak forest. He was not admitted to the Estonian Academy of Arts (ERKI) because his mindset defied standards in every sense and did not fit within the framework of traditional art education.

He subsequently began working in the art department of the Pärnu Sütevaka School; this eventually gave rise to the Nongrata school of thought and the art style known as “Southwest Estonian anarchism.” Yet, for his restless spirit, this was not enough: he enrolled in a master’s program at the Academy of Arts, even though, given his experience, he could just as easily have been a lecturer there.

Sorge has been a compelling figure as both a performance artist and a painter, and a clear connection exists between the two roles. Even when a painting contains no direct reference to a specific performance, the viewer can easily imagine one accompanying the work.
