Sandra Jõgeva
Sandra Jõgeva (b. 1976) is an artist, director, curator, writer and critic. She could be considered an anarchist in the Estonian art world, representing the restless and system-critical trend of the 00s. In contrast to the Estonian transition period of the 90s, where the art field, cleansed of previous hierarchies, gave hope for progress, Jõgeva points to the pain points and power relations that have taken hold in the new society in her work, which in her view instead produce decadence.
She holds a bachelor’s degree from the Department of Painting of the Estonian Academy of Arts and a master’s degree from the Department of Interdisciplinary Arts. Her work reflects postmodern confusion, the stagnant water of a society that has reached the end of history, which does not flow towards something new and better. A fermented mass has risen to the surface, which becomes the focus of the discussion.
