Raul Meel

Raul Meel (1941) is an Estonian artist whose diverse practice includes graphic art, painting, sculpture, installation and fire performance art, as well as concrete, visual, and sound poetry. Considered an “undesirable author” during the Soviet period, he nevertheless achieved international recognition and was a member of the International Club of Main Prize Winners of Graphic Art Biennials during the peak years of printmaking. Meel has participated in nearly 600 group exhibitions, held over 100 solo exhibitions, and created numerous public fire performances. His work places a strong emphasis on the materiality of language—its forms, proportions, and rhythms—and he has published hundreds of works of concrete, visual, and sound poetry in many languages. He has received several major Estonian lifetime achievement awards.
