Johanna Mudist

Johanna Mudist (b. 1991) is an artist living and working in Tallinn. She graduated from the Tartu Art College (BA) in Painting in 2014 and the Estonian Academy of Arts (MA) in Painting in 2017. She has furthered her professional skills by studying in Finland and Poland.

Johanna Mudist is known for her large-scale figurative oil paintings and miniature graphic drawings. In her figurative paintings, Mudist deals with human relationships, connections, a sense of belonging and isolation – but also their opposites: contact, intertwining and connectivity. The third party in the paintings is often nature with its elements, creating ambiguity in the works. Often, clear boundaries between humans and nature disappear, either formally or through ambiguous titles, emphasizing our constant connection with the world.

The artist’s last significant solo exhibitions were at ARS Studio 98 Gallery (2025), at ARS Project Space with the exhibition “Sisters Have Cruelty” (2024), and at Kuressaare Rae Gallery “Through Salty Water”. The next solo exhibition will take place in August-September 2026, at Hobusepea Gallery.
